Jay stayed with the car just like they'd rehearsed.

Martha looked like his Italian friend Dean
Jay had argued seeing Sammy Davis sat outside the bank
might make public interest overly keen.

Sinatra's skin was suffocating
so Sally lifted him away and gasped for breath.
It was clear to Martha as they ran with bin bags full of cash
that they had taken Sally out of her depth.

They'd found her in San Bernardino
a string of small liquor store 'stick-up's in their wake
She seemed so perfect for their needs; pretty, vulnerable, naive
Believing that was just their first mistake.

They fled the scene at what to Sally seemed the speed of sound.
Drove to a motel where Jay knew they wouldn't be found.
Martha sat her down and told her how she'd done them proud.
Sally never knew her heart could ever beat so loud.

Convincing her was half the battle,
half the battle that they had come to expect:
She wanted nothing more than to get out leave her hometown behind
which would have given her away if they'd have checked.

Because in truth, Sally was from Adelanto,
A little town a little way along the road.
Her father ran a liquor store, he'd been gunned down the week before
so now you know which way the story goes.

Back in that motel where there was no-one around
she woke at midnight and she moved without a sound,
blocked off their door removed every alarm she found,
and burned that motel to the ground.
